The producers published the following new features:KEEP THE CD AT HANDThere is no restriction on the number of times this program can be installed. At run time it will ask for the PerfectBase 98-CD to be inserted periodically.DATA COLLECTIONSWhen installing TasBase 2.1 you are asked which database to install to your harddisk. The options are:-No database-The standard database with appr. 27 000 games-PerfectBase 98 with appr. 400 000 gamesThe database selected will be opened automatically when starting TascBase. You can always use the PerfectBase 98 database directly from CDROM, without installing it on harddisk. Just select (Database/Open database) and go to the TBDATA directory on the CDROM. There you find the PB98 database, which is short for PerfectBase '98.WINDOWS 95This program has been tested with Windows 95. However, if you experience problems during the installation of TascBase under Windows 95, try selecting "Shut Down" and then "Restart in MS-DOS mode" before installing this program.New in TascBase 2.1:-Fischerandom chess (GameFischer random chess...)You can now play (and store) games with alternative initial positions. These are the 960 so called "Fischer positions".The pawns are placed as usual (on the second and seventh row) but the major pieces are shuffled. A few conditions apply:1. The king must be between the rooks and2. The bishops must be on different coloursCastling in Fischerandom chess:In every Fischerandom game it is possible to castle to both sides, provided the king and rook haven't moved yet and the king is not in check. The final position of king and rook directly after castling is the same as in normal chess: Kc1and Rd1 (Kc8 and Rd8) for "a-side castling", Kg1 and Rf1 (Kg8 and Rg8) for "h-side castling". Castling is done by moving the king onto one of the rooks. TascBase 2.1 is equiped with a 'Random King' chess program that knows the special castling rules, so you can analyze, play against it etc.Fischerandom games can be stored in gamefiles and databases. They can be exported to PGN, but not to CB format.- Comparing the moves of two games in detailIn the game list environment you can now compare two games in detail. This is useful when two games are similar and you suspect them to be a "double", but they are not exactly the same. The (SelectionsCompare 2 selected games) menu option will compare the two games that were selected first. You will get a report of the differences found and the possibility to delete the one you think is wrong.- Transpositions viewerBy selecting (BookCalculate Transpositions) in the (DatabaseView database) environment you can calculate all keys that either contain transpositions (displayed gray) or can be reached by transposition (displayed white). An example of the latter is 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3. The move 2. Nf3 will be displayed in white because 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. d4 will lead to the same position.At the same time in the line 1. Nf3 Nf6, the move Nf6 will be displayed gray, to put your attention to the fact that it contains a transposition. One or more moves (in this case 2. d4) are not displayed directly after Nf6, but still leadto a key-position; the position after 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3. Calculating the transpositions should be done once after making any changes to the key structure. It is automatically done as part of the database optimizing process as well.- PGNTOOL A separate utility is included to convert PGN files to TascBase gamefiles keeping comments and sublines. TascBase itself can read these PGN files but skips all comments and sublines. With the PGNTOOL you can also convert TascBasegamefiles to PGN files. You only need PGNTOOL to read or write more complex games. These are games with comments or sublines.Although it is a command-line utility, PGNTOOL is 32 bit and requires 32-bit windows (Windows 95 or NT) to run. Type PGNTOOL /? at the command line from the TBASE21-directory to obtain more information on PGNTOOL.TASBASE 2.1 comes on 1 CD. A strong analyst ist thus constantly at your disposal. It is the latest version of the famous chess program "The King" written by Dutch programmer Johan de Koning. As soon as a new position appears on the main screen, the chess program immediately begins to evaluate and calculate. This allows you to verify quickly, without asking, whether there is "something" in the position. For both relaxation and instruction TascBase provides a willing opponent for playing a game. Settings for time control and playing style are available of course, but remarkable is the use of the database as an opening book for The King.A useful feature for anyone analysing chess games: TascBase will automatically replay and evaluate one or even several games. Afterwards a graph will show the critical moments.TascBase uses a new database-structure for classifying games. Each position in an opening line receives its own key. Key positions don't transpose into obscure ways and variation-complexes don't end up in a single key. Each game is classified exactly where it belongs. The database structure is very clear. The connection between two consecutive key positions is always a single move. Finding your way to the key position desired equals replaying game.The database is shown in one of two ways. The classical list view shows all games in the current key, as well as any child-keys. A new feature is the database overview, which shows the key structure as a tree of variations.Spectacular is the concise presentation of a game in game view. Text moves and variations are all visible at the same time, and can be easily distinguished by the use of contrasting colours. You want to see a certain position or variation on the board? One click on the move and there it is.Import and export facilitiesTascBase users are not confined to the use of chess data in TascBase format. Games may be obtained from different sources in a variety of formats. Tascbase will read games in ChessBase, Nicbase, ChessMachine, PGN and other text formats.Should you want to share data with others not using TascBase, the normal choice would be to export to ChessBase format. The customization for text exports are unequalled. A period after the move number, or a space, both or none? You name it. All moves directly after one another for use in a word processor, or neatly aligned with each one in its own line? Variations numbered and indented? Each style can be created to your own liking.Integrated utilitiesAll you need for maintaining your data collection has been built into TascBase. All utilities are accessible from withing the program itself. Everything is found in the menu of TascBase. You would like to analyse the repertoire and results of a particular player? You are interested in the results scored with a particular variation? Sometimes really stunning conclusions are only a few mouse clicks away. Finding a specific position in the game-collection can be extremely useful, but how often are you looking for an exact position? TascBase will easily find (pawn-) formations, material distribution or combinations. An ongoing nuisance are the so called "doubles" in a database. TascBase has its built-in function for finding and (automatically) removing double games. Another problem is posed by the various spellings used by different sources, especially for player and tournament names. The "correct" command analyzes all spellings appearing in a game collection and enables you to correct them all at the same time. With only one command TascBase will search a number of files. This way you can retrieve all games by a particular player from collection of data-files at once.PamEntering chess games in a database can be time consuming. In Tascbase you are assisted by PAM (predict-a-move). This intelligent program module does part of the work. Click a square and PAM predicts what piece probably went there, or where the piece you have clicked probably went. Should it occasionally be wrong: no harm done. A click on the right mouse-button will execute the next most likely move.
